Mariner's Ridge

The trail of Mariner's Ridge begins with a sign that reads, "Private Property, NO TRESPASSING." This is at the end of a steep road that runs through a community of hillside houses. You know you've found the beginning of the trail when you see a house on the last right corner that you are more likely to see in a movie, set in Cape Cod-not in the islands. This spectacular hike started off with a rocky trail through low bushes, allowing us to enjoy the scenic view.

The path soon led us into a forest of pine needles, where it felt as if at any moment, our friends from the "Blair Witch Project" would appear with their shaky video camera. During the hike we were able to get peeks of the beautiful views of the valley and the ocean, which were awaiting us at the top. Since this hike isn't as well-known as others, we only saw about 10 other hikers (a nice change from the very crowded Koko Head!).

Towards the end of the hike, the trail's rocky terrain was covered in pine needles, which made it very slippery! It took us about 40 minutes to get to the top, where we were rewarded with almost a 360˚, breath-taking view of the island. This was something we had never come across on a hike before!. We saw Bellow's beach and Chinaman's hat on one side, and on the other side we saw Koko Head Crater, Hanama Bay, Sandy's beach, and even Diamond Head! The gorgeous view of the island was a great reward to this simple, secluded hike. This is definitely a favorite!
